July 26th- Liz is 23 and we are now in the mountains!!
Liz: "It's my birthday and we're going to have a bubble gum blowing contest." We had an extended
breakfast and competed for who could blow the biggest bubble. Bellies full and bikes loaded we set sail. After 10
miles of steady climbs and incredible downhills, we all took in the views of
the start of the Rockies and entered Royal Gorge. We all said our goodbyes to
Shaun and went on our way. The mountains are incredible. The only downside is
the elevation!! The air is thinner but our bikes didn't feel any lighter. After
a hard stretch, we ended in Guffey, CO, not the furthest distance but a hard
one. We were in our granny gears even going downhill! We immediately met Bill.
Before we could even get off our bikes he handed each of us a beer. We ate
dinner at the Bootlegger, the local bar, and Bill came in, giving each of us
girls a flower. When he heard it was Liz's birthday, he went back to his shop
and brought her a Guffey Garage sweatshirt.
We stayed in Bill's
cabins, TINY but so unique and fun! Everything about Guffey was great, a very
memorable town with some great characters. Bill is a collector of everything:
old bathtubs, birdhouses, cars, animal skulls, you name it. Apparently the TV
show American Pickers came to him and he told them to get the blank off his
property. Here's his website.
Thanks, Bill!!! We
loved Guffey and we love you.
