WE (the girls) MADE IT TO COLORADO!!!!
Thank you, Virgil, for letting us stay in your church and giving us rootbeer floats!
The girls had an early start, on the road by 4:30 and left Sheridan Lake, which is no longer a lake (and hasn't been for over 18 years). We watched a beautiful Kansas sun rise in our rear views and watched the moon set in front of us. We ate breakfast in Eads and chatted the man at the booth next to us. He left and then we found out he paid for our meal!!! Along the way we met a father-son duo headed east from Alexandria!! Awesome to meet fellow Virginians. We biked 56 miles to Sugar City, just 5 miles short of our planned end-point.Sugar City was settled around, you guessed it, sugar production. The factory has since closed and so have many businesses. While eating at a cafe there, we met Lynette, the owner. She collects pens and memorabilia from businesses in town, hoping to preserve the memory of the town. Her shop is basically a history museum... that serves yummy grilled cheese sandwiches. We sat for about 2 hours talking with Lynette, Liz of course napped, and the guys caught up to us. We all ate a second meal (common) and biked 5 miles to Ordway, our planned sleep-spot. However, upon arriving, we all thought about the incredible tail wind we had and decided to bike 10 miles further. Still, the tailwinds were pushing us and we made the decision to book it to Pueblo, Colorado, putting us at a total of 144 miles for the day!! So from sunrise to sunset we were on our bikes, not a bad way to spend a birthday. We were all glad to be in a town of more than 50 people and spent the next day off resting and enjoying the town.
