JMU across the USA

So, everyone in our crew has graduated from James Madison University. Annie and Liz graduated in 2012, I graduated in 2011, Brendan graduated in 2009, and Kevin graduated in 2008.

Here are other JMU alums who have/are currently biking across the United States.
  1. Manifest Destiny: JC and T, 2008
  2. Eric and his dad, 2013
  3. Esteban and Sarah, 2013
It's pretty impressive! Go Dukes! Know of anymore JMU alums who biked across the US?

Bike Overnights

So, we're gonna be training by doing a few bike overnights. We're teaming up with the local bike shop, Shenandoah Bicycle Company to make this happen. We've got all our saddle bags/panniers and bike trailers. So, we'll load it up with everything we think we need (spare bike parts, first-aid kit, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, cooking stuff and food, and we'll ride! It'll be our first overnight before our trip. It'll be s struggle carrying all that weight, but it'll be helpful figuring out what we need versus what we want. Got any tips?

Donations

You can donate here through PayPal by clicking on the orange-ish "Donate" button below. Your donations will go to food, shelter, gear, an emergency fund, and hopefully even a shower. If your money comes with conditions, let us know; we'll honor it (within reason)!

The Crew

PLEASED TO MEET YOU

Kevin!
Proudly representing the only original colony not bordering the Atlantic, this curly haired fellow is quite possibly the #1 advocate for biking, openly confessing his dismay for walking. Lover of all animals, orange onesies, Sunday Fundays, Guiness, bonkerzonkerwoofwaptronkalonk-ing, climbing, asking out pretty girls named Jeanné, never having the same address for more than 8 months, Kevin is the go-to guy for almost anything.  Rumor has it he looks pretty good in a fringe jacket.

Liz!
Hailing from Leesburg, Virgina, this young whippersnapper can normally be found tearing up the dance floor in a warm jacket, peeing herself from laughter (or from getting stuck in basement doors), frying homemade chips, flossing, or being the life of the party. When told casually about the bike trip, she jumped on board immediately.... can't say the same about her bike gear prepping ;) She'll be sporting the Surly Long Haul Disc Trucker, complete with pink handlebar tape and matching water bottles.

Jeanné!
<--- I know, I know. This picture makes her look way too cool for school. Don't be deceived! She's known for be-bopping around the house in Space Jam shorts and a Backstreet Boys shirt, pinching people's elbows, staying home on Friday nights to play with Mowgli (pictured left), treating a trip to Kline's like a business transaction, staying up late to watch Hey Arnold, and searching the interwebs for new knock-knock jokes. While doing all of the above, she is still able to be one of the best friends anyone could ask for!

Eric!

Eric, a.k.a. 2nd Meal, joined the trip  straight out from serving in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica. He forged together his gear on a used road bike, wielding most importantly of all things--a machete. He will yield at nothing in order to reach the final destination. Oregon or bust! His boisterous laugh and incognito goober-ness will be sure to take us a long way.

Annie!
Her last name is Long but her hair isn't!  If she's not cooking pancakes at the Little Grill, she's  probably showing off her lasers, disturbing the neighbors with loud band practice, following her friends around with a video camera, applying too much Red Spice deodorant, wearing a zebra t-shirt, or watching Macklemore & Ryan Lewis interviews. If you want to get on her good side, all you have to do is buy her a pint of Red Velvet from Klines. After fulfilling her duties as her sister's bridesmaid, she'll join the rest of the crew.

Tom!
Along for the first week of the trip, half responsible for Kevin's existence in the world. Tougher than most papas out there, pushing barriers that didn't even know they were barriers.

Videos - Thanks Annie!

My roommate and best friend, Annie Long, has been documenting the progress along the way. She's made them into videos. She's awesome and so are the videos. Check them out!

This is the video she made to aid my application to the Bicycle Touring Pro - Travel Scholarship.

This is the video she made when I called her informing her that I got the scholarship! Wahoo! I'm the 2013 Recipient of the Bicycle Touring Pro - Travel Scholarship.

March 29, 2013: I applied for a scholarship via The Bicycle Touring Pro Travel Scholarship. I'm one out of 54 finalists

This clip from Wayne's World accurately describes how I feel:
Many thanks goes out to Bicycle Touring Pro and all who donated to BTP's scholarship fund. Without you all, I wouldn't be dancing around soo much. So, thanks :)

Surly e-mail...

My housemate, Sarah, sent this e-mail to Surly bikes. Check it out:

Warm Showers and Couchsurfing

Anyone heard about and/or used "WARM SHOWERS: a Community for Touring Cyclists and Hosts"? I'm intrigued! I've heard about Couchsurfing, which we plan on using for our trip; however, I haven't heard of Warm Showers. I'm intrigued, and I'll be working on setting up an account soon. I'll add my Couchsurfing account soon.

Surprise Scholarship Celebration!

Last night, my friends threw me a surprise scholarship celebration!  I was totally surprised! There was food, music, lights, porch chillin', great company, and stories to share. People from all circles of friends came out. It was really lovely, and it meant a lot that they supported me.

Overslept the Harris-Roubaix....BUMMER!

Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition's classic annual take on the Paris-Roubaix ride was today at 12PM; It's called the Harris-Roubaix.

So the event started at 12:00PM - a great time to bike during a sunny, Spring day; however, I overslept it! Apparently my body needed the rest. Total bummer! I was looking forward to adding more miles on my bike and riding with a group of fun people.

What is the Harris-Roubaix?
The Harris-Roubaix is another great fun cycling event brought to you by the SVBC that happens every Spring on the same day as the Paris-Roubaix. It is a casual group ride from Harrisonburg to a family farm about 7 miles North of Harrisonburg; from the farm, there will be a 10-15 mile loop marked for your enjoyment. You are more than welcome to ride the loop once or more, there is an informal 3 lap race that will crown the Champion of the Harris-Roubaix.

~~My thoughts last night: "It's definitely not necessary to set an alarm for a 12:00PM road ride. I'll wake up with plenty of time to get ready, eat breakfast, and prepare my things for the ride. This will be fun!"
~~My thoughts this morning: "What?! It's 11:50AM! I don't have enough time to do everything before the ride! Bummer! Total bummer!"
~~Moral of the story: Always set an alarm for sweet events.
